Description
Meadowbank Chardonnay is a naturally fermented Chardonnay from the oldest vines on the estate.
Malolactic fermentation was stopped partway through this vintage, a deliberate brake that keeps the acid line sharp while still lending a little breadth. Fruit is P58, from vines now in their thirties on loose sand and sandstone over dark brown coffee rock rich in iron oxides, what Peter Dredge describes as a beautiful little spot. Picking ran over two passes, taking top and bottom of the block at marginally different ripeness, to hold a clone that tends towards the ripe side in check. Whole bunches were pressed to French barriques, 10 per cent new, for a natural ferment and nine months on lees.
Bright and linear, with lemon, white blossom and crunchy stone fruit, the rocky palate finishing long and dry. Acidity is the backbone. Drink it at 12 degrees with oysters, snapper off the grill, or a plate of raw kingfish and citrus.
