Description
Meadowbank Gamay is a light, perfumed Tasmanian red from some of the oldest Gamay vines in the country.
Gamay went into the original Pinot Block here in 1987, a prescient decision at a time when almost nobody in Australia was planting it, and a second small block called Top Woolshed followed in 2015. Both are farmed sustainably. The 2022 season was cool and slow-ripening with good flavour intensity but very low yields. In cooler years Peter Dredge steps back from full carbonic maceration, so the blocks came in one at a time: carbonic for the old-vine fruit, complete destemming for the young vines. After fermentation the wine was pressed straight to inert French barriques for three months on lees, then bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Crunchy and light-framed, with red cherry, raspberry and a peppery sappy edge. Tannin is barely there. Serve it cool, 13 to 14 degrees, with roast chicken, charcuterie, or a simple plate of pork and lentils.
