Description
Meadowbank Gamay is a whole-bunch-fermented Gamay from two blocks in the Derwent Valley.
Two blocks, two soil stories. The 1987 planting sits in loose sand above sandstone and dark brown coffee rock; the 2015 block, Top Woolshed, adds a component of dolerite, which is what gives the wine its darker, more mineral undercurrent. Both are farmed sustainably. Yields were low again in 2023, though fruit quality held up. Each block came in on its own and fermented as whole clusters across twelve days, was foot-stomped over the following few days, then pressed to old French barriques for three months before bottling unfined and unfiltered.
Aromatic and sappy: raspberry, violets, cracked pepper and a whisper of stalk. Fine acid, light tannin, plenty of juice. Serve at 13 degrees, even lightly chilled, with duck breast, a mushroom pasta, or grilled sausages and mustard.
