Meltwater Marlborough Chenin Blanc 2022

Meltwater Marlborough Chenin Blanc is the second release of a small-batch, single-vineyard Marlborough Chenin.

Demand for the grape is climbing across the region, but Mike Paterson has held his allocation from close friends Jan and Andrew Johns, whose Wrekin vineyard in the Brancott Valley carries a small parcel beside its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Given Chenin's thick skins and high acidity, he chases ripeness in Marlborough's moderate climate, with 13 degrees Baumé the norm, and that decision drives the style towards generous texture that works at the table. Bunches go whole to the press and the cloudy juice runs to a seasoned puncheon, where it ferments on its own yeasts; seven months later it comes out of wood. Malolactic conversion ran to completion, and the wine finished with four grams of residual sugar, which shows in the mouthfeel.

Fleshy ripe fruit, floral brightness, spice and the waxy texture the variety is known for, closing on bitter grapefruit and salt. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees. Roast chicken, pork belly, or a coconut and lime curry.
