Meltwater Marlborough Pinot Noir 2019

Meltwater Marlborough Pinot Noir is a bright, sappy Pinot Noir from the Ben Morven sub-region.

Sustainably farmed grower vineyards feed this second label, and the Pinot comes from Ben Morven, a cooler pocket south of the Wairau. Fruit was hand-harvested into small bins and sorted on arrival at the winery. Ten per cent of bunches went in whole with the remainder destemmed, and the must stayed twelve days on skins, fermenting on indigenous yeast in two and three-year-old French oak. There is no new wood and no adjustment: the wine is made the way Mike Paterson makes his single-vineyard Pinots, on a shorter leash and at a friendlier price.

Pale in the glass, generous on the nose with red fruit, florals and something earthy behind. The palate is succulent and bright, with a whiff of smoke and a sappy edge giving it depth. Serve at 13 to 14 degrees with duck, roast chicken, or charcuterie.
