Mendes & Symington Contacto Alvarinho 2024

Mendes & Symington Contacto Alvarinho is a Portuguese white made by a partnership between two well known names in Portuguese wine.

Alvarinho, called Albarino across the border in Spain, is a thick skinned white grape long associated with the far north west of Portugal, where it gives whites with real structure and firm natural acidity. Anselmo Mendes is widely credited with showing what the variety is capable of, working with lees ageing, skin contact and barrel fermentation at a time when Alvarinho was almost always made in a simple, early drinking style; the Symington family are among the best known producers in the Douro. Contacto takes its name from the short period of skin contact given to the juice before fermentation, a technique that draws more out of those thick skins than pressing alone would.

Serve at around 10 degrees with shellfish, grilled sardines or the salt cod dishes of northern Portugal.
