Description
Mengoba Brezo Blanco is a Godello-led white from the highest and rockiest sites in Bierzo.
Bierzo, in the far northwest of Castilla y León, is better known for Mencía, but its high, cool white sites are increasingly interesting. Grégory Pérez, a Bordeaux-trained winemaker who set up Mengoba in the region, sources this entry white as a blend of about 85 per cent Godello with 15 per cent Doña Blanca. The Godello comes mostly from a stony site at Carracedo, with further parcels of sandy loam and clay-limestone at Valtuille and Villafranca del Bierzo above 500 metres. The Doña Blanca is grown on comparable ground and includes older bush-vine material from the slate soils of Espanillo. Vine age across the plots runs from twenty to eighty years. Fermentation is with wild yeasts, and the wine spends six months on fine lees in a combination of tank and large cask.
Drink over the next three years. It goes with grilled prawns, roast pork belly or a simple chicken salad. Serve at 10-12°C.
