Mengoba Bierzo Brezo Blanco 2022

Mengoba Brezo Blanco is an entry-level Bierzo white blending Godello with the region's near-forgotten Doña Blanca.

The blend is 85 per cent Godello and 15 per cent Doña Blanca, drawn from a spread of Bierzo's highland vineyards. Most of the Godello comes from a stony site at Carracedo, with further fruit from sandy loam and clay-limestone plots at Valtuille and Villafranca del Bierzo. The Doña Blanca is grown on comparable sites and includes some older gobelet-trained material on the slate soils of Espanillo. Vine age across the parcels runs from 20 to 80 years, and all the fruit is picked by hand, which is unusual at this price. Fermentation is with wild yeasts and the wine is raised on fine lees in tank and large cask for six months, giving texture while keeping the fruit tangy and direct. Gregory Pérez's whites have become steadily purer and more energetic, and this is the bottling where that shift is easiest to taste.

Drink over the next three years with grilled prawns, salads and light chicken dishes. Serve at 10-12°C.
