Mengoba Bierzo Brezo Mencía 1.5L MAGNUM 2021

Mengoba Brezo Mencía is Gregory Pérez's entry-level Bierzo red, from old vines scattered across the slate hillsides of Valtuille and Villafranca, offered here in magnum.

Bierzo lies in the north-west of Castilla y León, sheltered between mountain ranges, and Mencía is its signature red variety, giving perfumed, medium-weight wines with fine tannin. Gregory Pérez draws this bottling from multiple remote parcels of 30- to 60-year-old vines dotted across the slate-rich slopes around Valtuille and Villafranca del Bierzo. The blend also takes in a splash of Godello and Alicante Bouschet, known locally as Garnacha Tintorera, a legacy of the way the region's old vineyards were interplanted. Pérez destemmed 90 per cent of the fruit in pursuit of something pure and refreshing, fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless-steel tanks and bottled early to hold on to the wine's freshness. Altitude and a wide diurnal range give the fleshy fruit a bright structural counterweight, with gravelly tannins adding length.

Drink over the next five years. A good detour from cru Beaujolais or Loire Cabernet Franc, with charcuterie, roast chicken or grilled vegetables, at around 16°C.
