Mengoba Bierzo Brezo Mencía 2021

Mengoba Bierzo Brezo Mencía is an early-bottled Mencía from old parcels scattered across the slate hillsides of Valtuille and Villafranca del Bierzo.

Bierzo sits in a mountain-ringed basin in the northwest of León, cooler and wetter than most of Spain and planted largely to Mencía. Gregory Pérez founded Mengoba after training in Bordeaux, and this is his entry-level red. The fruit comes from multiple remote parcels of 30 to 60-year-old vines on slate-rich slopes, and the blend takes in a splash of Godello and Garnacha Tintorera, known elsewhere as Alicante Bouschet, a legacy of how Bierzo's old vineyards were traditionally interplanted. Pérez destems 90 per cent of the fruit for purity and freshness and ferments wild in stainless steel. The wine is bottled early to hold its mouth-watering character. Altitude and the swing between warm days and cold nights give it the fresh structure that carries the fruit.

Drink over the next three or four years, lightly chilled, with charcuterie, roast chicken or grilled vegetables. Serve at 14-16°C.
