Description
Brezo Blanco is the entry white in Bodegas Mengoba's range, 90 per cent Godello with 10 per cent Doña Blanca from the highland vineyards of Bierzo.
Bierzo sits in a mountain-ringed basin at the western edge of Castilla y León, wetter and greener than the Spanish plateau and closer in feel to Galicia. Godello is its serious white grape, capable of real weight and a stony, saline finish, and it is joined here by Doña Blanca, an older local variety that brings citrus lift. Mengoba is the work of Grégory Pérez, a Bordelais who worked at Châteaux Grand-Puy-Lacoste and Cos d'Estournel before a motorcycle trip brought him to Bierzo; he now works from San Juan de Carracedo with vineyards centred on the hamlet of Espanillo, above 600 metres on decomposed slate with some clay, farmed without herbicides and at low yields. The Godello for Brezo comes mainly from a stony site at Carracedo, with further plots on sandy loam and clay-limestone at Valtuille and Villafranca.
Drink young, within three years. Serve at 10–12°C with grilled octopus, empanada or roast chicken.
