Mengoba Brezo Rosado 2015

Brezo Rosado is a Bierzo pink wine made mainly from Mencía by Gregory Pérez.

Bierzo sits in the north-west of Castilla y León, where an Atlantic climate meets slate and clay slopes and Mencía is the dominant red grape. Gregory Pérez, trained in Bordeaux and of Spanish and French parentage, founded Bodegas Mengoba at Espanillo and works old vines across several villages. This rosado is drawn from mature Mencía on the clay and limestone of Valtuille and Villafranca and on the pure slate of Espanillo, the highest vineyard in Bierzo, with a little Godello from the Carracedo vineyard for freshness and texture. Both varieties are crushed together and left 24 hours on skins, then pressed into a single 1,800-litre tank and fermented with indigenous yeasts. The result is a rosado with red-berry lift and a spicy, savoury edge rather than the pale and neutral style now common.

Drink it young and well chilled, at about 10°C, with jamón, grilled prawns or a paella.
