Description

Mengoba Estaladiña is made from a near-extinct Bierzo variety that no longer appears on the appellation's list of permitted grapes.

Estaladiña was long assumed to be Jura's Trousseau, known across northern Iberia as Bastardo or Merenzao, though some growers now question that, since the vines and berries look different enough to warrant a challenge. Whatever its identity, it became rare enough in Bierzo to be dropped from the D.O.'s permitted varieties. Grégory Pérez sources his from one of the few remaining plots in the Alto Bierzo, planted 35 years ago in poor, rocky clay at Cacabelos, 540 metres above sea level. The winemaking has changed as his understanding of the variety has: the fruit is now picked earlier, and maceration is treated as infusion rather than extraction. The grapes are foot-trodden and ferment as whole bunches in two 400-litre terracotta jars, then stay in the same vessels for ten months with no added sulphur. The result is a pale, floral, lightly spiced highland red of real tension.

Drink it young, within about five years, lightly chilled or at 16°C, with charcuterie, roast poultry or grilled vegetables.
