Mengoba Godello Sobre Lias 2016

Mengoba's Godello Sobre Lías is a lees-aged white from old Godello plots in the Bierzo hills of north-west Spain.

Godello is the serious white grape of Bierzo and neighbouring Valdeorras, capable of texture and mineral length rather than obvious aromatics, and it responds well to extended lees work. This wine is made exclusively from Godello drawn from a selection of thirty- to forty-year-old plots around Cacabelos, Valtuille and Villafranca del Bierzo, planted at 550 metres on river stones, sandy loam and slate. Bodegas Mengoba is Gregory Pérez's project, built on small parcels of old vines across the western side of the region. The fruit is fermented with wild yeast in wooden foudre and then raised for ten months on fine lees in two 4,000-litre oval wooden vats — large enough that the wood contributes almost no flavour, and the effect is textural, giving the wine breadth and a savoury, saline finish.

Drink now and over the next five years. Serve at 10–12°C with grilled octopus, roast chicken or a seafood rice.
