Millton Te Arai Syrah 2021

Millton Te Arai Syrah is a savoury, peppery Gisborne Syrah from one of New Zealand's organic and biodynamic pioneers.

The east coast of the North Island is among the first places on earth to see the sun each day, and this region is better known for Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay than for reds. James and Annie Millton started here in the 1980s and farm to Demeter principles, doing as little as possible in the cellar. The vines grow on alluvial river flats near Manutuke, beside the river that gives this wine its name. Syrah is only a small planting, fermented with native yeasts and handled gently to bring out its cooler, spicier side.

Spice and fine tannins, with more finesse than power. Serve at 16–18°C with lamb shoulder, venison or mushroom dishes, now or over the next few years.
