Description
Montecalvi Chianti Classico is a Sangiovese-led red from the hills between Florence and Siena, in the heartland of Tuscany's most historic wine zone.
Chianti Classico was first mapped in 1716, when Cosimo III de' Medici issued an edict setting the boundaries of Chianti and three other Tuscan wine areas, one of the earliest attempts anywhere to protect a wine name by geography. The modern denomination is anchored on Sangiovese, a late-ripening variety that responds sharply to altitude and to the stony galestro and alberese soils found through the zone. Here it is joined by small proportions of traditional local reds, Canaiolo among them, in the manner of the old field blends that predate single-variety bottlings. Wines are aged in wood before release and carry the black rooster of the Consorzio on the neck.
A classic match for Tuscan cooking: bistecca alla fiorentina, ribollita, pappardelle with ragù or a plate of pecorino. Serve at cool room temperature, and allow good bottles a decade or so in a cool cellar.
