Montinore Estate Pinot Gris 2020

Montinore Estate Pinot Gris is a dry, textural Pinot Gris from the Willamette Valley in Oregon.

Pinot Gris sits second only to Pinot Noir in Willamette plantings, though Chardonnay is gaining fast, and while some growers are pulling Gris out to replant, this estate is doubling down. The reason is the pairing of cool seasons in the Tualatin Hills with Laurelwood soils, windblown loess over ancient basalt, which produces a Gris style found nowhere else. Seven blocks are farmed here, averaging 29 years of age and scattered across the property, which hands Stephen Webber a wide palette of flavours and structures to assemble. The wine fermented in stainless steel and sat undisturbed on its lees for ten months.

Pear, stone fruit and spice meet penetrating acidity, a fleshy middle and a linear, mineral-flecked finish. It drinks well alone and better with food. Serve at 10 degrees with crisp-skinned salmon, butter-basted roast chicken, or a bowl of prawn linguine.
