Montinore Estate Red Cap Pinot Noir 2020

Montinore Estate Red Cap Pinot Noir is a fruit-forward Oregon Pinot Noir blended from two vineyards.

A season of two halves, 2020: dry weather, meagre yields and a warm summer, offset by stretches that behaved perfectly. Stephen Webber had eighteen vintages at the estate behind him by then and handled it without much drama, turning out concentrated wines. Three-quarters of this blend comes from dry-farmed estate vines, the balance from the Tidalstar vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, whose warmer microclimate and volcanic soils add fruit weight to the perfumed, silky home-site fruit. Destemmed and fermented in small open-top steel vessels, the wine matured ten months in stainless steel and French and Hungarian oak, 20 per cent of it new.

Dark cherry and plum with brooding depth behind the fruit, firm structure and a long energetic finish. It drinks well straight away. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees with duck, pork belly, or grilled mushrooms and lentils.
