Mount Macleod Chardonnay 2020

Mount Macleod Chardonnay is an organically grown Chardonnay from South Gippsland, sealed under screwcap.

The Chardonnay block slopes to the south on the well-drained red ferrosol that runs through Gippsland, and it was the first parcel on the property to gain organic certification, back in 2008. Winemaking is deliberately hands-off: each batch is pressed, lightly settled and racked to used barrels with plenty of solids still in the juice, then fermented wild and raised un-sulphured on lees for twenty months in neutral barrels that previously held the Caledonia Australis Chardonnay. Both primary and malolactic fermentation happen naturally, and the aim is to have them finish quickly so freshness and fruit character survive.

Twenty months on lees gives it real breadth: white peach, lemon, a nutty lightly oxidative edge and a long dry finish. Oak is invisible. Serve at 12 degrees with roast chicken, grilled squid, or a leek and cheese tart.
