Description
Mount Macleod Chardonnay is a wild-fermented Chardonnay from a certified organic block in Gippsland.
Neutral oak only, and twenty months in it, using barrels that formerly housed the Caledonia Australis Chardonnay so nothing woody gets in the way. Fruit comes off a south-facing slope on the red ferrosol soils common through Gippsland, the first parcel here to be certified organic in 2008. Batches are pressed, lightly settled and racked to barrel with a generous load of solids, then left to ferment on wild yeast without sulphur. Malolactic runs naturally too, and Mark Matthews pushes both fermentations to finish promptly so the wine keeps its freshness and its fruit personality.
Citrus and white-fleshed stone fruit with a savoury leesy weight and a dry, drawn-out close. It tastes more expensive than it is. Serve at 12 degrees with roast pork, grilled whiting, or a bowl of gnocchi with butter and sage.
