Description
Mount Macleod Chardonnay is an organic Gippsland Chardonnay raised in concrete and old barrique.
Confidence in the fruit is the governing principle in Mark Matthews's shed, and everything follows from it: wild ferments, neutral oak only, and as little intervention as the wine will tolerate. The block faces south on well-drained red ferrosol, the classic soil of South Gippsland, and was the first parcel here to gain organic certification, in 2008. Vines are dry-grown and yields held to roughly 1.5 tonnes per acre. Five per cent of the fruit fermented on skins to add texture and phenolic tension; the balance was pressed as whole bunches. Concrete took one half with no malolactic conversion, fifteen-year-old barriques the other with partial, both nine months on lees.
A touch more grip than the year before, with punchy citrus, mouth-watering freshness and an impressively long finish. Nothing is overdone. Serve at 12 degrees with grilled fish, chicken and tarragon, or a wedge of hard goat's cheese.
