Mount Macleod Chardonnay 2024

Mount Macleod Chardonnay is a value-driven organic Chardonnay from the red soils of South Gippsland.

Few Australian growers deliver this much for the money, and it has more to do with farming than with cleverness in the winery. The vines are dry-grown on well-drained red ferrosols, the block was certified organic in 2008, and yields are held at roughly 1.5 tonnes to the acre in soils around Leongatha that would happily produce far more. In 2024, 5 per cent of the fruit fermented on skins to build texture and phenolic tension while the rest was pressed as bunches. Half went to concrete without malolactic conversion, half to barriques of fifteen years and older with partial conversion, and both sat nine months on unstirred lees.

Vivid citrus, a stony mid-palate, mouthwatering acidity and length that keeps going past where the price suggests it should. Serve at 12 degrees with grilled snapper, roast chicken, or a simple risotto with peas and parmesan.
