Mount Macleod Gruner Veltliner 2020

Mount Macleod Gruner Veltliner is a lower-alcohol, savoury dry white from Gippsland, under screwcap.

Two things pushed Mark Matthews towards Austria's signature grape: a shift in Australian eating away from heavy animal protein, and the marginal character of his own site, which suits a leaner style. This is the second release. The vineyard has been organic from the day it went in, and a small forest that Matthews planted years ago wraps around three sides of it, a genuine windbreak and habitat corridor. Three clones of Gruner cover a little over three acres, and the crop was fermented on wild yeast and raised mostly in stainless steel, with one neutral barrel included for breadth and complexity.

White pepper and green plum lead, with something more exotic behind them, guava or even a touch of rosewater, over a racy palate with a sappy, cool close. Serve at 10 degrees with schnitzel, asparagus, or a green salad with radish and dill.
