Mount Macleod Gruner Veltliner 2021

Mount Macleod Gruner Veltliner is a racy, peppery Gruner from a certified organic Gippsland vineyard.

Three clones of Gruner Veltliner sit on a little over three acres here, planted organically from the outset and sheltered on three sides by a small forest that Mark Matthews put in years ago. Gruner was a considered choice: a marginal Gippsland site and a shift in how people eat in this country both pointed towards a lower-alcohol, savoury white. Fermentation ran on wild yeast, and the wine was raised mainly in stainless steel with a single neutral barrel in the mix to lend breadth and a little complexity.

Striking on the nose, with white pepper, green plum and a hint of guava or rosewater, and racy through the palate, with texture but no weight and a sappy, cool finish. Serve at 10 degrees with pork schnitzel, grilled asparagus, or a fennel salad.
