Description
Mount Macleod Pinot Noir is an organically grown Gippsland Pinot Noir under screwcap.
Vines are dry-grown and organically farmed on the deep ferrosol soils of Gippsland, which hold water well enough that irrigation is unnecessary and give the wines their earthy undertow. Fruit fermented naturally and was then raised partly in tank, with a long post-ferment maceration, and partly in old wooden barrels that had previously held the Caledonia Australis Pinot Noir. Mark Matthews used a larger share of whole bunches in 2020, around 20 per cent, which meant a shorter extraction: the stalks gave up their tannin early, and there was no reason to keep pushing.
Red cherry, sappy stalk spice and a forest-floor earthiness, with light tannin and bright acid. It drinks easily and it drinks cool. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees with roast duck, mushrooms on toast, or a plate of cold roast pork.
