Mount Macleod Pinot Noir 2021

Mount Macleod Pinot Noir is a silky, organically grown Pinot Noir from South Gippsland.

Ten per cent whole bunches went into a wild ferment, and the wine was then raised on lees across concrete and old wooden barrels with at least ten uses behind them, previously home to the Caledonia Australis Pinot Noir. That combination, concrete for slow even maturation and long-retired oak for a little breathing room, is what keeps the fruit so clear. Mark Matthews farms organically in a corner of South Gippsland where few people are looking, and the question his wines raise is whether better value organic Victorian Pinot exists. It does not.

Pure red fruit, a dusting of spice and that damp-forest note Gippsland does so well, carried on fine tannin and fresh acid. A slight chill suits it. Serve at 15 degrees with duck breast, mushroom risotto, or charcuterie and cornichons.
