Description
Mount Macleod Pinot Noir is a fragrant, organically farmed Pinot Noir from South Gippsland.
Twenty acres of wilderness sit beside the north-facing Pinot vines, and Mark Matthews attributes the wine's forest-floor character, sous bois if you want the French, directly to that neighbour. He is a vigneron with an ecologist's habits, and the wines are rarely submitted for review, which is why a producer this good stays quiet. Fruit fermented spontaneously with under 5 per cent whole bunches and matured twelve months mainly in concrete, with a small portion in old wood of at least ten uses. Matthews prefers concrete for its slow, controlled maturation, and finds the wine unfurls with more purity for it.
Fine and fragrant, with red cherry, damp earth and gentle spice over supple tannin and bright acid. Purity is the defining quality. Serve at 15 degrees with roast chicken, duck sausages, or mushrooms cooked with thyme and butter.
