Müller-Catoir Bürgergarten Erste Lage Riesling 2019

Müller-Catoir Bürgergarten Erste Lage Riesling is a dry, organically grown Pfalz Riesling from one of the region's oldest vineyards.

The Bürgergarten lies on the lower slopes of the Haardt mountains and is rated at Grosses Gewächs level. It was first planted more than 700 years ago, making it one of the oldest vineyards in the Pfalz, and a site that survives that long usually has something to say for itself. Müller-Catoir makes a Grosses Gewächs from a small parcel within the vineyard, Im Breumel, while the greater share, culled from the Gehren and Aspen micro-terroirs, goes into this Erste Lage or classified first growth bottling. Bürgergarten's topsoils are sandy and deep over yellow sandstone bedrock, a combination that brings power, perfume and intense mineral freshness. Farming is organic. The wine was naturally fermented and raised for 10 months in a mixture of steel tanks and five-year-old 600-litre Halbstück ovals, around a quarter of the volume, a regime the estate finds gives more expressive, less reductive wines that show well on release.

Ready now and good for a decade. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled white fish, pork schnitzel or a herbed goat's cheese salad.
