Müller-Catoir Bürgergarten Erste Lage Riesling Museum Release 2020

Müller-Catoir Bürgergarten Erste Lage Riesling comes from one of the oldest vineyards in the Pfalz, and is released here after extra time in the domaine's cellar.

Bürgergarten lies on the lower slopes of the Haardt Mountains and is rated at Grosses Gewächs level. It was first planted more than seven hundred years ago, which tells you something about the site. Müller-Catoir makes a GG from one small parcel within it, the Im Breumel, while the larger share, taken from the Gehren and Aspen micro-terroirs, goes into this Erste Lage, or classified first growth, bottling. The topsoil is deep and sandy over yellow sandstone bedrock, a combination that brings power, perfume and mineral freshness. The estate farms organically. The wine fermented with indigenous yeasts and spent ten months in a mixture of steel tanks and five-year-old 600-litre Halbstück ovals, about a quarter of the volume; Martin Franzen finds that this, with extended lees ageing, gives a more expressive and less reductive wine that shows well on release.

Drinking well now and with a decade or more ahead of it. Good with roast pork, smoked fish or a Riesling-friendly curry, at 10 to 12°C.
