Description
Müller-Catoir Bürgergarten Im Breumel is the estate's only Grosses Gewächs, from a walled parcel it owns outright at the top of the Haardter Bürgergarten.
Im Breumel is a historic clos within the Bürgergarten, and Hans-Günther Schwarz, the estate's long-serving winegrower, always held it to be the most important single site in the Mittelhaardt. A sandstone wall encloses the uppermost section and creates a warmer microclimate; the parcel faces south-east, warms quickly in the morning and cools soon after sunset thanks to the forest alongside. The soil is poorer than in the lower Bürgergarten, pure mottled yellow sandstone gravel with a high proportion of decomposed stone. Yields are held to a very low 35 hectolitres per hectare, and in most years about a third of the wine ferments and matures in 1,000-litre oak vessels. The result is dry, tensile and built to unfold slowly, with a long and powerful finish.
Rewards five to fifteen years in bottle; if opened young, decant and serve with food. Serve at 10-12°C with roast poultry, grilled crayfish or a mature Alpine cheese.
