Müller-Catoir Gutswein 1L 2022

Müller-Catoir Gutswein is the estate's litre-bottle house wine, a Riesling-led blend normally kept back for restaurants near the winery.

Gutswein is the base tier of the VDP classification, covering wines blended from estate fruit. Müller-Catoir, at Haardt in the Pfalz's Mittelhaardt, farms organically and does not usually export this bottling, filling it in one-litre format for the local trade; Bibendum secured a first small parcel only after years of asking. The blend is at least 85 per cent Riesling with smaller amounts of Rieslaner, Scheurebe and Weissburgunder, the German name for Pinot Blanc. Even at this level the fruit is picked by hand, drawn mainly from the estate's valley-floor holdings on the sandy soils below the Haardt Mountains. Vinification is straightforward, in steel, and the wine is bottled young to keep it fresh. It is dry in style, with the pithy citrus drive and salinity that mark the house.

Drink young, over two or three years, as an all-purpose white with schnitzel, roast pork or Asian food. Serve at 10 to 12°C.
