Description

Müller-Catoir Haardt Riesling is a dry village-level wine from organically farmed vineyards on the Haardt slopes of the Pfalz.

Haardt is the village that lends its name to the Haardt hills, on the sandstone slopes at the northern end of the Pfalz. In the VDP classification a village wine sits above the estate tier and below the classified sites and, as in Burgundy, it may draw on several vineyards, including fruit declassified from higher-ranked ones. That is the case here: this bottling includes young-vine material from Bürgergarten, rated Grosses Gewächs, together with the classified sites of Herzog, Mandelring and Herrenletten. Müller-Catoir has been in the same family since the eighteenth century and farms organically. The Pfalz is warm and dry by German standards, and its sandstone gives Riesling a broader shape than slate does, though the wine is finished dry and the acidity is held in place. The handling in the cellar is deliberately plain.

Good now and for eight to ten years; serve at 10-12°C with pork belly, smoked trout or a lightly spiced Asian dish.
