Description
Herrenletten is a dry single-site Riesling from Müller-Catoir, grown on organically farmed sandy clay in the Pfalz.
The Herrenletten is an Erste Lage sitting immediately alongside the Bürgergarten, on the Mittelhaardt above Haardt. Its name carries both history and geology: Herren records that the land was held by noble landlords in the Middle Ages, while letten describes the soil, a sandy clay with layers of limestone and chalky clay running through it. The oldest Riesling vines here are around forty years old, and the site also carries Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. Müller-Catoir farms organically and the wine is naturally fermented, raised for ten months in a mixture of stainless steel tank and five-year-old 600-litre Halbstück oak ovals, the wood accounting for about a quarter of the blend. Compared with the neighbouring Bürgergarten, Herrenletten usually offers more youthful generosity and a rounder shape.
Drink now and over the next eight years. Serve at 10–12°C with roast pork, grilled prawns or a spiced noodle salad.
