Description
Müller-Catoir Herrenletten Riesling comes from an Erste Lage site immediately adjacent to the estate's Bürgergarten vineyard.
Herrenletten sits next to Bürgergarten on the Haardt slopes, and the name records both history and geology: Herren for the noble landlords who held the ground in the Middle Ages, letten for the soil, a sandy clay carrying layers of limestone and chalky clay. That clay component holds water through the dry Pfalz summer and gives the Riesling grown here a broader, firmer frame than the pure sandstone sites nearby. The oldest Riesling vines in the vineyard are around forty years old, and the site also carries plantings of Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. Müller-Catoir farms the whole estate organically. Under the VDP system Herrenletten is an Erste Lage, the tier below Grosses Gewächs, and the wine is made dry in the estate's unadorned manner, with the site rather than the cellar doing the work.
It will repay five to ten years in bottle; serve at 11-12°C with roast pork, seared scallops or a firm washed-rind cheese.
