Description

Müller-Catoir Herzog Rieslaner Auslese is a sweet wine from the Haardt's Herzog vineyard, bottled in half.

Rieslaner is a crossing of Sylvaner and Riesling developed in 1921. It is little grown, but it matters here: Hans-Günter Schwarz, the domaine's cellar master from 1962 to 2002, brought it to Müller-Catoir and planted it in Herzog, at Haardt, where he made a run of celebrated sweet wines that are now almost impossible to find. Martin Franzen has enthusiastically continued the tradition since 2003. The grape's tendency to take botrytis even in dry years, while retaining its very high acidity, makes it the estate's most reliable sweet-wine variety. In 2020 it was the only variety at this address to develop any botrytis at all, and then only to a limited extent, so this Auslese rests more on ripeness than on noble rot. It was bottled at 11.5 per cent alcohol, 9.2 grams per litre of acidity and 91.1 grams of residual sugar.

Drinking well now and capable of decades in bottle. Serve at 8 to 10°C with a fruit tart, foie gras or a mild blue cheese.
