Description
A Beerenauslese from Rieslaner, the crossing that has become Müller-Catoir's most dependable sweet wine grape.
Rieslaner is a cross of Silvaner and Riesling developed in 1921 and is barely planted anywhere, but it has a long history at this Pfalz estate, where it was established in the Herzog vineyard at Haardt and has produced the house's most celebrated sweet wines ever since. The variety takes to botrytis readily while holding on to very high acidity, which is exactly what a wine at this level needs. Beerenauslese sits near the top of the Prädikat scale and is made from individually selected, botrytis-affected berries picked well after the main harvest, so volumes are tiny and the must is intensely concentrated. The numbers tell the story here: 8% alcohol, 14 grams per litre of acidity and 197.5 grams of residual sugar, a balance that keeps the wine bright rather than cloying.
It is drinking now and will keep for decades; serve at 8-10°C in small measures with a fruit tart, foie gras or blue cheese.
