Description

Müller-Catoir Herzog Rieslaner Beerenauslese is a botrytis sweet wine from the Haardt vineyard most closely associated with this variety.

Rieslaner, a 1921 crossing of Sylvaner and Riesling, is the Pfalz estate's most dependable grape for sweet wine, because it attracts botrytis readily while retaining very high acidity. The Herzog vineyard at Haardt, at the foot of the Haardt mountains, is where the variety was first planted here by the long-serving cellar master Hans-Günter Schwarz. Beerenauslese sits a step below Trockenbeerenauslese in the German scale: individually selected botrytised berries, picked late, giving concentrated must but not the extreme shrivel of a TBA. This bottling shows 10% alcohol, 11.2 g/L acidity and 159.7 g/L residual sugar, a balance that leaves it sweet and rich but still lifted, and it is sold in a 375ml bottle.

It can be drunk now or cellared for twenty years or more; serve at 8–10°C with blue cheese, apple tart or stone-fruit desserts.
