Müller-Catoir Herzog Rieslaner Trockenbeerenauslese 375ml 2018

Müller-Catoir Herzog Rieslaner Trockenbeerenauslese is a botrytis sweet wine from the Haardt vineyard where the estate's Rieslaner story began.

Rieslaner is a crossing of Sylvaner and Riesling developed in 1921, and it holds a particular place at this Pfalz domaine. Hans-Günter Schwarz, cellar master from 1962 to 2002, brought it to Müller-Catoir and planted it in the Herzog vineyard at Haardt; the sweet wines he made from that site have long since disappeared into private cellars, and Martin Franzen has taken up the work with equal enthusiasm since 2003. What makes the variety so useful here is its inclination to botrytis even in dry years while it keeps very high acidity, which is what stops a wine at this sugar level from going flat and heavy. Trockenbeerenauslese is picked berry by berry from shrivelled, botrytised fruit, so yields are tiny. This bottling carries 6% alcohol, 13.3 g/L acidity and 391.7 g/L residual sugar, and comes in a 375ml bottle.

It will keep for decades and needs only a small glass; serve it at 8–10°C with Roquefort, a poached-pear dessert or foie gras.
