Description
Müller-Catoir Mandelgarten Riesling Spätlese comes from a red sandstone site on the northern edge of Gimmeldingen, widely rated the best vineyard of the southern Mittelhaardt.
The Pfalz runs south from Bad Dürkheim along the Haardt Mountains, and its Mittelhaardt villages hold the region's finest Riesling sites. Mandelgarten is a tear-shaped vineyard on the northern border of the small village of Gimmeldingen, next door to Haardt, and takes its name from the almond trees that blossomed here in the Middle Ages. It sits on a red sandstone deposit with a deep water vein beneath, which feeds the vines minerals and keeps them supplied through dry summers. Müller-Catoir farms 1.5 hectares here, organically, though much of the holding is planted to Scheurebe. This Spätlese was raised in stainless steel and finished at 10 per cent alcohol, which sets the residual sugar in a lighter, more filigreed frame than the vineyard has given in some recent years, and keeps the salinity of the site to the fore.
Drinking well now and good for fifteen years or more. Serve at 8 to 10°C with spiced Asian dishes, smoked fish or a fresh fruit dessert.
