Description
Müller-Catoir MC Riesling is the estate's entry-level dry Riesling, cropped at 35 hectolitres per hectare.
MC is the introduction to the Müller-Catoir range, but the farming behind it is not treated as an afterthought. It is made entirely from hand-harvested, estate-grown Riesling off the organically farmed sandstone slopes of the Haardt hills, around Mussbach, Gimmeldingen and Haardt itself. The fruit comes largely from younger vines, and the estate offsets that by cropping at 35 hectolitres per hectare, a very low figure for a wine at this level, which gives it a depth and structure that entry-level German Riesling seldom carries. Sandstone drains readily and warms quickly, producing a rounder frame than the slate of the Mosel, while the dry Pfalz climate keeps the fruit clean at harvest. The wine is finished dry and sealed under screwcap.
Drink now or over the next five or six years; serve at 10-11°C with grilled fish, chicken salad or a fresh goat's cheese.
