Murdoch Hill Apollo Pinot Noir 2020

Murdoch Hill Apollo Pinot Noir is a super-premium Piccadilly Valley Pinot Noir from a strict barrel selection.

Michael Downer has made Piccadilly Valley Pinot Noir since 2013, drawing on a spread of growers across varying aspects, clones, soils and climates, and a top-tier Pinot to join the Galactic series had been in the pipeline for years before 2020 finally lined everything up. Three vineyards on the western ridge, mostly east-facing, have been the focus, and one of them, in Piccadilly opposite the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden, supplies 85 per cent of this wine. The understudy site at Ashton contributes forest notes that offset Piccadilly's red-fruited intensity. Forty per cent whole-bunch ferment, then up to ten months in one puncheon, one Stockinger demi-muid and one barrique.

Perfume first, with red cherry, rose and a lick of spice, then a palate carrying layers, depth and texture underneath the lift. This is Adelaide Hills Pinot at full stretch. Serve at 16 degrees with duck, roast veal, or a mushroom and tarragon tart.
