Murdoch Hill Apollo Pinot Noir 2021

Murdoch Hill Apollo Pinot Noir is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Piccadilly in the Adelaide Hills.

For 2021 the wine became a single-vineyard bottling. Of the three sites on Piccadilly's western ridge that Michael Downer has worked with over the years, all predominantly east-facing, one has consistently stood above the rest: a vineyard opposite the Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens whose leaner soil profile, combined with beautiful ripening conditions that season, made the case for going it alone. Forty-five per cent of the fruit fermented as whole bunches, and the wine spent up to ten months in French and Austrian wood, demi-muids, puncheons and barriques, roughly 45 per cent of it new, tight-grain and low-impact, chosen to build texture and structure.

Dark cherry and rose petal over a fine-grained, layered palate, with new oak reading as structure more than flavour. It has both lift and grip. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted, with duck, roast lamb, or mushrooms and soft polenta.
