Description
Murdoch Hill Artisan Series Sulky Riesling is a dry Riesling from Macclesfield, in the southern Adelaide Hills.
Macclesfield sits at the cooler southern end of the Hills, and the small vineyard behind this wine grows on an ironstone bed, the sort of ground that gives Riesling line and a stony edge without much flesh. Fruit was picked by hand and destemmed, then left to a wild ferment in a 1,500-litre foudre, where it stayed two months before moving to tank for a further two ahead of bottling. Large old wood and time on solids build width into a variety that can otherwise come across as narrow, and the Artisan Series is where Michael Downer takes this sort of liberty.
Lime, green apple and a dusting of talc. The palate is fine-boned, dry and long, the ironstone showing as a mineral rasp on the close. Drink it cold, around 8 degrees, with oysters, ceviche or a whole baked snapper.
