Murdoch Hill Artisan Series Surrey Pinot Meunier 2020

Murdoch Hill Artisan Series Surrey Pinot Meunier is a light-bodied Adelaide Hills red made entirely from Pinot Meunier.

Meunier is grown in tiny quantity in this country, mostly for sparkling, so a still bottling of it is worth noticing. The fruit comes from one small vineyard at Uraidla, 550 metres up and facing northwest, planted to vines now past twenty years old. Michael Downer holds that the variety only performs when crops are small, and poor flowering in 2020 arranged that without any help from him. Half the pick went in as whole bunches for a wild ferment in small open vats, and the wine spent six months in barrique and puncheon, a fifth of it new Stockinger oak.

Perfumed and pale, with red cherry, rosehip and a peppery snap. Light on its feet, with gentle tannin and bright acid. A short chill helps, 13 degrees or so. Good with charcuterie, roast quail or a mushroom tart.
