Murdoch Hill Red Blend 2021

Murdoch Hill Red Blend is an Adelaide Hills red built on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Sixty per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and 20 per cent Merlot carry the blend, with Sangiovese at 15 per cent and a splash of Syrah completing it, off the Oakbank and Lenswood vineyards. Both sites tilt mostly east, out of the worst of the afternoon sun, which is why the wines that come off them lean savoury and fine-boned. Soils run sandy loam over medium clay, shot through with ironstone, quartz and schist. Bunches were picked by hand then destemmed into open fermenters, where the wine sat on skins for two to four weeks; extended maceration is how Michael Downer builds layers while keeping tannin soft. Ten months in fine French barrique followed, a fifth of it new.

Blackcurrant and dark plum with a savoury, olive-brined edge and a leafy Cabernet lift. The tannins are supple and the finish dry. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with roast lamb, beef ragù or a wedge of aged cheddar.
