Murdoch Hill Rocket Chardonnay 2024

Murdoch Hill Rocket Chardonnay is a barrel-fermented Adelaide Hills Chardonnay from the Lenswood vineyard.

The 2024 comes entirely from Lenswood, a well-regarded plot sitting at 500 metres and planted to clone B76 alongside mature I10V1 vines. Michael Downer and his team farm it sustainably with a strong organic bent, which took some nerve through a cool, wet season. Fruit was hand-sorted after picking and pressed as whole bunches into tank, then racked to tight-grained French barrels at half new, where fermentation took place. Texture came from lees stirring and a full malolactic conversion. Eight months in barrel were followed by several more in tank before bottling.

Tense and bright, with citrus and white stonefruit over a broad seam of mineral grip. Generous in the middle, precise at the edges. Serve at 12 degrees alongside grilled crayfish, roast chicken or a plate of burrata and peas.
