Murdoch Hill Rosé 2021

Murdoch Hill Rosé is a bone-dry Adelaide Hills rosé built on Sangiovese.

Half the 2021 is Sangiovese, grown at Forreston at roughly 360 metres, a clone Michael Downer had long wanted to work with since it presents pale, fleshy and juicy, which is exactly what pink wine wants. Merlot accounts for a quarter, with an assortment of white varieties making up the rest. The season was cool and dry, and some in the Adelaide Hills rate it among the best the region has had. Half the pick fermented cool in tank to hold the aromatics; the other half went to foudre and barrel for texture. The finished wine carries no residual sugar at all.

Strawberry, watermelon and citrus pith, with a savoury lees undertow from the barrel-fermented half. Dry, textured and tightly focussed, and there is real flavour here for a wine this pale. Serve at 9 degrees with grilled fish, chicken skewers or a plate of prosciutto and melon.
