Murdoch Hill Rosé 2022

Murdoch Hill Rosé is a dry Adelaide Hills rosé, half of it Sangiovese.

Given how much attention Michael Downer's reds and whites attract, the pink wine tends to be passed over, which is a shame. Sangiovese from Forreston, at about 360 metres, makes up half of it; the clone is pale, fleshy and juicy, and suits the job. Merlot and a miscellany of white varieties fill out the rest and add depth. Everything is pressed straight off skins, held a day, then sent to old barrique and foudre for a wild ferment. A few months on lees follow before bottling, and that is where the savoury character underneath the fruit comes from.

Summer berries, watermelon flesh and rind, sweet spice and a lees-derived savouriness playing underneath. Juicy and fleshy with racy acid and a touch of grip. Serve at 9 degrees with barbecued prawns, saltimbocca or a bowl of olives.
