Murdoch Hill Sauvignon Blanc 2022

Murdoch Hill Sauvignon Blanc is an Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc fermented mostly in tank.

Crops were small in 2022 and the season cool, which concentrated the fruit off the three estate blocks behind this wine. Four separate picks across those blocks give the blend a spread of ripeness to work with. Ninety per cent fermented in tank and the remaining tenth in barrel, that small wooden portion adding weight and texture against an otherwise driven, restrained frame. Michael Downer has never treated Sauvignon Blanc as the throwaway of the range, and the attention it receives in the cellar here is much the same as the Chardonnay gets.

Grapefruit, gooseberry and a snap of green herb, with a rounder middle than the variety usually manages. Dry and taut through the finish. Eight degrees. Pour it with prawn cutlets, asparagus or a goat's curd tart.
