Murdoch Hill The Cabernets 2022

Murdoch Hill The Cabernets is an Adelaide Hills blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Half the blend is Cabernet Sauvignon and a tenth Cabernet Franc, both off the Oakbank estate vineyard, with Merlot from Lenswood growers making up the remaining 40 per cent. French oak in several formats, barrique, demi-muid and foudre, gives the wine its frame without burying fruit that stays bright and aromatic. Classical in shape, it runs on fine texture and refreshing acid, the sort of claret-minded red the Adelaide Hills does well and gets little credit for. Michael Downer built it with Australian dinner tables in mind.

Boysenberry and dark plum, a savoury tapenade note, and the Franc showing as a discreet wild-herb lift. Fine-grained tannin and a fresh, dry finish. Serve at 17 degrees with roast lamb, a good steak or a shepherd's pie.
